What has the most influence over your car experience?
Your senses.
The sight, sound, feel, and smell of your car dictates the experience. We also have the sense of taste, but I don’t recommend licking your car. Your senses impact how you feel every time you see or drive your car and most likely without you noticing. Because of this, let’s take a look at the areas your senses interact with your car and how we can improve them.
Why Your Car Experience is Important
I believe how clean your car is has tremendous influence on your mood. This happens whether you’re paying attention or not. While your car is dirty you’re driving around in a feeling of disgust. You may be distracted enough by what you have to do today that the disgust doesn’t boil to the top of your list, but it’s there. A slight negative experience that’s nibbling at you. Everyday.
You’ll go through the day having positive and negative experiences. Some of these you can control and some you cannot. If you had a negative experience everyday, but it was influenced by something that is under your control, wouldn’t you want to flip that experience? There’s enough out there you can’t control that’s in your way. Don’t let the things you can control be in your way too.
You Are In Control
…of how clean your car is.
So make sure your experience is helping push you through the day.
Every time you wash your car you’re going from rags to riches. You’re going from apologizing to whoever is riding in your car for the mess to receiving compliments on how clean your car is. You’re going from a discrete feeling of disgust to an obvious feeling of satisfaction in the effort you put forward and appreciation of how good your car looks and feels. This is your “stop and smell the roses” moment. And you are in control of it.
If you discover you can control the way your car looks and how that influences your mood what else can you control that will give you a boost?
Everyday you have an experience with your car that you’re not fully paying attention to. Everyday you see your car, hear your car, feel your car, and smell your car, but don’t give those interactions any thought.
Getting the Ultimate Car Experience
One day, you read a couple really cool blogs about “My View on the Power of the Experience” and “Unlock the Ultimate Car Experience: It’s Under Your Control”.
Because of that, you start paying attention to the way your car looks when you walk up to it. You start noticing how the door handle feels when you open your door. You’re aware of the way the door sounds when you close it. As you’re starting the car you’re more aware of what the engine sounds like when it starts, if you can see clearly through your windows, and the smell of your car’s interior.
And then, because of that, you notice your car is a little dirty. Your door handle feels gritty and dirty against your fingers. Your door has a slight rattle when it’s closed. There’s also a slight rattle coming from the engine when you start it. While you’re sitting in the driver’s seat you take a look around and notice how dirty your windows are and how they would be easier to see through if they were crystal clear. Lastly, the smell of your interior is, let’s just say, not what you want.
Clean Car, Clean Mind
This leads you on a journey to finding small ways to improve the experience you have everyday with your car. You learn that car detailing finishing sprays increase the shine and slickness of any surface so you add this to the end of a car wash routine. One weekend you have a little extra time so you look closer at your car door. Turns out that rattle was a loose clip which you snap it back into place. You dive deeper into the rattle coming from the engine. There is a loose exhaust heatshield under the car which ends up being a quick fix. And on another day you have an extra 30 minutes so you run out to clean your car windows and give your interior a quick wipe down with a fresh smelling cleaner.
And then one day, without much thought, you go through a normal morning routine walking to your car. You notice how shiny your car is and how the light is hitting it just perfect. You go to open your car door and it feels so smooth and clean that maybe you hold onto it for an extra half-second. As you slide into your car you close your door and it has that new car, positive closing sound. You start the engine and it’s a smooth start. Taking a quick look around you notice you can clearly see through all of your windows and your mirrors are perfectly clean. You sit back for a second, take a deep breath and notice the fresh smell inside your car.
Conclusion
In the beginning, it seems like cars only get you from one place to another. If you pay attention they actually play a role in your mood, confidence, and how much you’re enjoying your day. And then you end up giving your car attention with the intent of improving your experience.
You’re giving yourself an unfair advantage. You’re ready to take on the day.
Is all of that worth it?
Absolutely.
